Some soils don't respond to detergent at all. Adhesive, tar, mineral scale and oxidation each need a different mechanism, and using the wrong one usually means damaging the surface while you try.
Four soils, four mechanisms
Adhesive fails at the bond line, not the surface. That's why scraping does damage, it attacks the substrate instead of the bond. The right approach softens the adhesive until it releases on its own.
Mineral scale is a deposit, not a film. Detergent slides off it. It needs contact time on a vertical surface, which is a delivery problem as much as a chemistry one, hence a clinging gel rather than a liquid.
Oxidation is the surface converting rather than something sitting on it. Aggressive acids will strip it and pit the metal underneath, which is why kitchen steel needs a controlled treatment and a proper rinse-and-oil finish.
Specialty applications.
Adhesive
Label gum, packing tape, decals, stickers, protective film and mastic. Softens the bond line so residue wipes off instead of being scraped off a finished surface.
Tar & Asphalt
Road tar, asphalt spatter and heavy petroleum film on vehicle lowers, plant and equipment. Solvent action first, then degreasing to lift what's left.
Mineral Scale
Hard-water rings, limescale at the water line and the deposits that build under a rim. Delivered as a clinging gel so it holds contact on vertical porcelain.
Surface Protection
Finishing the job so it stays clean: biodegradable chemistry where run-off matters, and a controlled exterior wash that won't strip or streak the surface underneath.

Spot-test
Always test an inconspicuous area first. Specialty chemistry is stronger by definition and finishes vary.

Wet and wait
Fully wet the residue and let the product reach the bond line or deposit. Reapply rather than scrubbing early.

Neutralise
Wipe, then clean the area with soap and water. On steel, dry fully and re-oil.
